Girl Scouts Learn About Healthy Living

March 14, 2011

Many of Connecticut's Girl Scouts celebrated the 99th anniversary of Girl Scouting on March 12 at a Live Healthy, Lead Healthy event at the Westfield Meriden Mall. Sponsored in part by Aetna, the event showcased a variety of activities encouraging girls to get active and make healthy life choices. Meriden's Mayor Michael S. Rohde welcomed the Girl Scouts during the opening ceremony for the event and presented a proclamation declaring the day to be Girl Scout Live Healthy, Lead Healthy Day at the Westfield Meriden Mall. Approximately 900 girls and adults from 66 different towns attended the event and tried their skills at hip hop, Dance, Dance Revolution, and Salsa Dancing. Participants also learned about proper food portion sizes, oral health, liver health, the dangers of secondhand smoke, ways to reduce stress, healthy relationships, safety tips, and more.

"The Live Healthy, Lead Healthy day at the mall was a great way to introduce a variety of healthy living options to girls," said Cathy Monckton, one of the event's organizers from Girl Scout of Connecticut. "We gave them information to help them make positive, healthy life choices in everything from proper nutrition to stress reduction."

In addition to the Live Healthy, Lead Healthy Day at the Mall, Girl Scouts of Connecticut also provides ongoing programs across the state that promote both physical and emotional health for girls. From encouraging girls to get active through outdoor camps and sports activities to promoting positive self image and giving them the skills they need to build healthy relationships and stay safe on the internet, Girl Scouting is helping girls build character and skills for success in today's world.
