Girl Scouts of Connecticut Receives $15,000 Grant from the Perrin Family Foundation for Girlz R.U.L.E.®

February 25, 2014

Girl Scouts of Connecticut believes that anti-bullying programming can make a difference in a young girl’s life – not only for girls to overcome bullying situations, but to empower girls to make changes to prevent bullying. Girlz R.U.L.E.® is Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s signature program for girls in grades two through eight that focuses on four key principles: Respect, Understand, Lead, and Empower. Over a 6-8 week period, a series of challenge initiatives are utilized so participants can learn about the power of positive thinking, ways to end conflict, and how to combat bullying behaviors.

Girl Scouts of Connecticut is grateful to continue this programming in the communities of Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury, and now Bridgeport, thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Perrin Family Foundation. With this grant, Girl Scouts of Connecticut will enhance the youth voice elements of the Girlz R.U.L.E.® program, in which girls collectively decide what community issue they want to address. Girls work together to plan and implement a way to address their concern. In 2013, projects ranged from school poster drives, to forming anti-bullying clubs, speaking at school assemblies, and creating video presentations about bullying.

This type of programming aligns with the Perrin Family Foundation’s understanding that youth-led social change builds the confidence, skills, and collective leadership of young people while addressing injustice.

“We are grateful for the support of the Perrin Family Foundation for our Girlz R.U.L.E.® programming,” said Mary Barneby, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut. “These funds will allow us to continue to serve girls in Stamford, Norwalk, and Danbury, and enable us to expand to Bridgeport. It’s important to help build a girl’s awareness of self-image and sense of self that allows them to build safe, healthy relationships, while helping others recognize the negative and positive impact of their words.”
