To the Editor:
During these challenging economic times, it can be difficult for your readers to determine which investments make sense. I would like to propose one option that still offers a great return: summer camp. The summer camp experience is an essential part of childhood that fosters optimal growth and development in independence, self esteem, leadership ability, peer relationship skills, environmental awareness and decision-making. With facilities across the state, Girl Scouts of Connecticut offers girls in grades 1-12 extraordinary Girl Scout camp experiences that help build a valuable foundation for their future.
In addition to traditional outdoor experiences, Girl Scout camps offer a variety of special interest programs such as Girls Go Green! where girls learn ways to protect the planet while enjoying crafts created from recycled materials and playing ecologically-based games; or Advanced Art where campers create works of art using different mediums and learn what careers are available in the field of artistry; or Space Station Carlson a program that lets girls build their own space ship while learning about constellations, planets, and meteors.
Additionally, this year Girl Scouts of Connecticut introduced Camp CEO for older girls to meet and be inspired by women professionals from across the state. The program will allow female executives such as, Secretary of the State, Susan Bysiewicz and University of Hartford Provost, Lynn Pasquerella, to share their journey of success and encourage the next generation of leaders.
Girl Scout camps and programs are designed to give girls treasured memories through learning the importance of personal responsibility, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment. The experience can change the way a girl sees the world and her place in it. It is, indeed, an invaluable investment with a great return.
