Girl Scouts of Connecticut Receives Grant for Leadership Program

from the Lincoln Financial Foundation

August 24, 2009 - Girl Scouts of Connecticut will be able to serve more girls living in economically challenged areas of Hartford thanks to a generous grant of $10,000 from the Lincoln Financial Foundation. Girl Scouts of Connecticut is committed to bringing the benefits of Girl Scouting to all girls. However, many girls in these areas are often unable to participate in traditional troops, so Girl Scouts of Connecticut has expanded participation options to meet their needs. As part of this program, the Lincoln Foundation grant will help to fund the Girl Scouts' Leadership Journeys program to Hartford girls in grades 4 and 5 beginning in October 2009.

"Girl Scouts of Connecticut appreciates the generous support of the Lincoln Financial Foundation," said Jennifer Smith Turner, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut. "The Lincoln Foundation's assistance facilitates our goal to bring Girl Scouting to every girl and to encourage them to discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place."

The focus of this Leadership Journey, "It's Your World-Change It!" incorporates Girl Scouting's three leadership keys: discover, connect, take action. Working as a team, girls will identify needs in their community, reach out to others, and take action. Participants in the program will meet a minimum of ten times and take two day trips either to learn about women who have made a difference or to advance their community action project. The program affords an opportunity to earn three awards: the Power of One Award, the Power of Team Award, and the Power of Community Award. From her experience in the program, each girl will understand that she is an agent of change and that she has the power to build a better life for herself and her community.
