Girl Scouts of Connecticut Celebrates Girl Scout Week

February 24, 2010

98th Anniversary of Girl Scouts

During the week of March 7 - 13, Girl Scouts of Connecticut will join Girl Scouts around the country in celebrating Girl Scout Week and the 98th anniversary of Girl Scouting. Since its beginning, Girl Scouting has inspired millions of girls and women with the highest ideals of courage, confidence, and character. Today, more than 44,000 girls in Connecticut are discovering their path to leadership through Girl Scouts. Our girls take part in a vast array of activities from sports to international travel and science and technology projects, as well as gain knowledge about such things as business and economics.

Self-discovery and community service were core values that Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low sought to instill in girls from the earliest days. When the organization was founded in 1912, Low's vision was to establish an organization where any girl could expand her personal horizon by having fun while exploring new interests and contributing to society.

"Girl Scout Week is an opportunity to celebrate the long and proud history of Girl Scouting and to engage our girls in making our communities and the world a better place," said Jennifer Smith Turner, CEO, Girl Scouts of Connecticut. "It is also a chance for us to thank the many dedicated Girl Scout volunteers and supporters who make Girl Scouting in Connecticut possible."

As Girl Scouts of Connecticut celebrates the 98th anniversary of Girl Scouting, Girl Scouts throughout the state will continue to lead by example in their communities and in the larger world around them. Through the exemplary Girl Scout program girls will discover their strengths, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place.
