As your national delegates prepare for the convention in Utah, they have been gathering ideas for discussions about strengthening the outdoor experience. The learning from our membership surveys, conducted to inform our Long Range Property Plan, is also a resource for the delegate team. Key findings reflect the need to improve our camps to offer the amenities sought by girls of today and greater variety of camping options. Ways that GSUSA can help councils include developing tools to measure the outcomes of girls’ experiences in the outdoors and communicating the benefits of the experience. The description of the skills/attributes gained through outdoor programs should be modeled after the way in which they speak of the Girl Scout Cookie Program’s Five Skills. Future posts will share what develops at Convention.

The Strategic Plan adopted for the council calls for us to develop a long-range property plan, and keeping everyone informed on the progress of our emerging property plan is a priority for the council. We have put together teams of staff and volunteers who have been working
with a property consultant from GSUSA to create a comprehensive review of the properties, current programs, and usage. These teams were at the Kickoffs at the end of August to gather more feedback.

Property Planning Timeline

The task groups collected their research and created the council's Long Range Property Plan, following the timeline below. Here is a printable version of the timeline with more information.

The fall meetings,
Tree scheduled at our various outdoor properties around the state, were intended to share the information that the three task groups—property, program, and marketing—have been gathering. The online surveys taken by adults and girl members have provided us with a wealth of information. The property group has visited each of the properties to update the in-depth surveys made at the time of realignment. The program staff has data based on the use of our properties and feedback related to on-site programs. This information will inform a fresh vision for outdoor program on Council properties. The volunteers and staff on each of the task forces are looking forward to gathering your input as part of the process of drafting a plan for the board. ClipboardThe process then moved in January to the Board of Directors, which reviewed and commented on the preliminary plan. This draft was reported out and workshopped at the February meetings. Click here to view the presentation from the winter meetings.

Based on these conversations, the Long Range Planning Team created a second draft that the Board of Directors reviewed at the regularly scheduled March meeting.

Following that, in April, there were a final round of meetings for comment on the plan.

The Board voted to approve the recommendations on May 5, 2014, and the recommendations were shared at our annual meeting on May 28, 2014.
