What issue did your Take Action project address?
Tara Farms Rescue is a non profit organization in Coventry, Connecticut. They take in horses, goats, pigs and cats that have been abandoned. Due to their isolated location, few people are aware of their work so our goal was to teach people about the farm and volunteer opportunities.
What was your Take Action Project? Who did you involve in your project?
Our goal was to make people aware of the rescue in hopes of getting them more volunteers, volunteer at the farm to help the animals as well as hold a fund raiser to purchase food for the animals.A tri fold about the farm was developed by the girls as well as a tri fold about spaying and neutering animals. They were on display for a tea party that was held to raise funds to purchase food for the farm animals. The eleven members of our troop were involved in our project.
What were the results? How did it affect the community?
The farm was contacted by two other girl scout troops that are interested in helping at the farm. The tri folds were placed in the South Windsor Library and at the tea party to educate people about the farm. The farm has been contacted with several new volunteers due to these efforts.
What did you learn from the experience?
Our girls learned that there are organizations out there that a lot of people do not know about. They discovered that taking care of unwanted animals is difficult work and expensive. Our girls learn social skills as they interacted with people to tell them about the farm. Organizing a fundraiser for 100 people helped the girls to understand finances in a completely new way.Our girls learned that they had to work together in order to achieve all of the steps in our goal.
