What's hiding beneath the surface of your local stream? In this
90-minute stream study, Girl Scouts will dive into freshwater science
as they explore aquatic insects and their role in water ecosystems.
From stonefly nymphs to mayflies, scouts will collect, identify, and
investigate macroinvertebrates-tiny creatures that help scientists
determine stream health. This hands-on, feet-wet experience will
connect the dots between water quality, insect life cycles, and
environmental stewardship. Scouts will learn to use real science tools
and techniques as they discover the important role streams play in our
world.
Participants will:
- Use nets and trays to
collect stream-dwelling invertebrates
- Identify aquatic nymphs
and match them to adult forms like dragonflies and flies
- Learn
how scientists use insects as bioindicators of water quality
-
Explore the freshwater ecosystem and how to protect it
Badge Connections: Supports Junior Eco Camper, Cadette Eco Trekker,
Senior/ Ambassador STEM and Outdoor Journey components, and
complements citizen science or environmental advocacy
activities.
