East Lyme, CT — Earlier this year, during a brainstorming session, the 5th grade members of East Lyme Troop 63799 shared their passion for helping those facing food insecurity. Their idea blossomed into a hands-on project that combined creativity, teamwork, and community service.
The troop began by picking hundreds of apples at Scott’s Yankee Farmer, a local farm that invites community groups to harvest leftover apples at the end of the season to prevent waste. This marked the second year the troop participated in apple picking, but this time they took their efforts a step further.
Gathering at the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme, the girls rolled up their sleeves and transformed the apples into homemade pies for the Homeless Hospitality Center of New London. From peeling and slicing apples to measuring ingredients and decorating the pies, the troop handled every step with care. They even donated six shopping bags full of fresh apples alongside the pies.
After baking, the girls ensured the church kitchen was spotless, leaving behind not just delicious pies but a shining example of dedication and compassion. Their enthusiasm and teamwork turned a simple idea into a meaningful act of kindness for those in need.
